Happy Mother’s Day! I drew my mom a squirrel in pen and ink/watercolor to go with the chickadee piece for my grandmother. I picked up some frames for them at IKEA so that they look legit.

Sorry if this question is super invasive, but I thought I'd ask: you work in robotics? I'm considering that as a possible career path (finishing my undergrad studies next year in ME); do you have any suggestions on how to get involved in the field, outside of research or interning at a group like Boston Dynamics?

Well, apart from postgraduate work, (in fact, including postgraduate work!) the best way to get into robotics is just to do it. I would recommend finding hobbyist groups, or people doing robotics stuff at your university. Maybe try to find a group entering one of the many robotics competitions and challenges around, and get involved with that. Robotics is best done collaboratively, but if you really can’t find anyone else locally, grab some Lego and an arduino and go nuts. Maybe pick up a book from amazon on fun things to do with basic electrical components and a micro controller (there are many of these, sorry I can’t recall any titles off the top of my head) - you’d be surprised what you can scavenge from an old radio.

if you want to do robotics as a career, then research is one path, but just finding a firm doing interesting stuff and applying as a graduate can also get you quite far. My current employer started at art college, and taught himself robotics from the ground up, because he likes making things that move. If you’re interested, and passionate, just go at it and keep your eyes peeled for opportunities.

oh, and national robotics week is this week, too! See if there are any events in your area.

i can’t livestream because I don’t have internet at home, so instead I tried doing a screen capture video to see if that would keep me focussed. It did! for half an hour anyway. This is the sped up version of me painting the face of a selkie, for a commission.

I am a shit artist. and then artists with so much skill like you go around saying “why is lighting terrible?” and “shit is rough yo” and it just UGH if this is BAD by your standards then what the fuck am I?

haha not offended! And I have had the EXACT same reaction when artists leagues better than me have posted stuff and been all “oh this is bad”, it’s like motherFUCKER

But I mean that’s the whole point, you never get 100% happy with your art, you always know all the flaws. And that’s great cause it means you got somewhere to go, means you’re learning. And I think it’s probably not bad for people to realise that artists of all calibres get frustrated and dissatisfied.

Anyway I eventually went back and tweaked some of the stuff that was bothering me, so now I quite like that piece, if it makes you feel better! (Not that it’s perfect!)

Would not suggest instagram. They have a clause now that they own and can sell your stuff now apparently?

You know I’d completely forgotten about that? Probably because I basically never use instagram. Mind you I haven’t checked the terms and conditions to verify it myself, but I remember the kerfuffle.

I think it’s a legitimate concern, but after some consideration I think I’ll still do the challenge. 1) I’m not putting hi res pictures up, which mitigates their usefulness. 2) I’m not a photographer anyway - but I will avoid posting anything I am particularly concerned about retaining the rights to. 3) this is something I wanted to do mostly to share with my friends, many who do use Instagram. I think after the month is over, I’ll probably just go back to never using the app. But thanks for the heads up, and for reminding me about the issue.
